Here’s an art show that’s happening right now at the William Traver Gallery. Glass artist Charles Parriott just got back from the Czech Republic, where he’s been working his craft on a Fulbright scholarship. (See Josh? If he can do it, why can’t you?) During his off hours he read L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz to his children and realized that the original story is much darker than that venerable Judy Garland confection. He created a series of glass sculptures inspired by the characters in the book, which tend be much darker than the ones in the movie. The gallery website has this quote from Glass magazine: “Charlie Parriott has found even more layers in this childhood tale, teasing out meanings and connections that make the characters uniquely his own.” Check it out and give me a full report.
